POTSDAM — A Canton woman was charged Wednesday with driving with ability impaired following a personal-injury accident that took place Oct. 2.
Valerie B. McCarthy, 53, was charged at 6:53 p.m. on Court Street with first-degree operating a motor vehicle while ability impaired by drugs.
McCarthy was operating a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu eastbound on the South Canton Road shortly before 6 a.m. when he vehicle exited the north side of the road and struck a small group of trees and a fence post.
While interviewing her troopers said her speech was slurred and she showed signs of impairment.
McCarthy said she believe she fell asleep while driving and that she was on the way to the hospital for back pain. She admitted to taking prescription Vicodin and prescription soma.
She complained of chest pain and was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital for treatment. At the hospital, she consented to giving a blood sample.
Her vehicle was towed from the scene.
She was issued an appearance ticket returnable to Potsdam Town Court Nov. 5 at 1 p.m.
