While the overall crime picture appears to have worsened substantially in St. Lawrence County from 2009 to 2010, violent crime overall was much lower, according to figures released Monday by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).

In St. Lawrence County the crime rate rose 32.4 percent from 2009 to 2010, the snapshot statistics show that,

But the figures also show violent crime dropped by 29.2 percent and property crime was up by 39.8 percent.

Violent crimes include murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, and property crimes, broken down into burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft. The report does not paint a complete crime picture, as many types of crimes are not tracked.

In plain numbers, with 2009 figures first followed by 2010 numbers, total crimes in the categories followed rose from 1,815 to 2,403; total violent crimes declined, 195 to 138; of those, murders rose from 0 to 2, forcible rapes declined from 38 to 23, robberies increased from 11 to 19, and aggravated assault dropped from 146 to 94.

Property crimes rose from 416 to 463, and of those, burglaries went up 416 to 463, larcenies increased from 1.166 to 1,748, and motor vehicle thefts rose from 38 to 54.

Less complete figures for St. Lawrence County for the first six months of 2011, as compared with the first six months of 2010, indicate a better trend, with a 3 percent decline in the “index” crimes DCJS follows for these reports, with a 21.5 percent decline in violent crimes and a 1.6 percent drop in property crimes.

In Franklin County, the number of crimes overall followed by the DCSJ was up .6 percent from 2009 to 2010; property crimes are up 1.6 percent and violent crimes are down 12.3 percent. For the first six months of 2011, overall figures were down 1 percent, with property crimes down 2.5 percent, but violent crimes up 19.2 percent.

And in Jefferson County, the overall rate is down 10.2 percent; property crime was down 10.9 percent and violent crime declined by 3.1 percent, from 2009 to 2010. The first six months of this year dropped by 13.7 percent from the first six months of 2010; violent crime dropped by 34.7 percent and property crime dropped 11.4 percent.
