MADRID — The Madrid-Waddington Central School District is holding two events to help educate and bring awareness to the opioid and e-cigarette epidemics that are having an impact nationwide.

On Tuesday, Oct. 23, from noon until 2 p.m., Madrid-Waddington, Heuvelton, and Lisbon students in grades 10-12 will view the film “Chasing the Dragon.” The film is intended to educate students about the dangers of opioid addiction and how to avoid them.

Following the film, a panel discussion will take place. The discussion will include representatives from the U.S Attorney’s Office, St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, New York State Police, local first responders, prevention educators, an addiction and recovery specialist, family members of those affected, and individuals in recovery.

A facilitator from the U.S. Attorney’s Office will guide the discussion through the progression of addiction, as well as the community’s response and resources for it.

From 6-8 p.m. that evening, the public is invited to attend a Drug Awareness Community Outreach Event.

During the first segment from 6-7 p.m., Joe Boswell from the Reality Check division of Seaway Valley Prevention Council will present on the dangers of e-cigarettes (“vaping”). From 7 to 8 p.m., a three minute trailer of “Chasing the Dragon” will be shown, followed by another panel discussion similar to what took place in the afternoon.

The focus of this presentation is to educate community members and parents about the dangers of opioid addiction and how to avoid them,” said Joe Binion, principal of Madrid-Waddington Central.

Several local agencies will also be in the lobby to offer advice and assistance to those confronted by the realities of addiction.

“This event will help educate parents about the realities of what our youth is confronted by each and every day,” Binion said.
