Ogdensburg woman takes top prize in Remington Juried Art Show

OGDENSBURG -- An Ogdensburg woman won first prize in the Remington Museum’s 2016 Juried Art Show.

JianFen Wells was honored for her 30-inch by 36-inch acrylic on canvas “The Water of the Lake,” which she painted this year.

Second place went to Gary Larsen of Edinburg for his 20-inch by 20-inch infrared black and white photograph “Split Rock Falls” from 2014.

Third place winner was Georgette Bacon of Nicholville for her six-inch by eight-inch organic sculpture “Ocean Song,” which she made this year.

Juror Catherine Tedford picked the winners from a pool of 67 works by 66 artists.

Art in the Adirondacks publisher Dave Werner has a podcast about the exhibit and images of the entries at http://bit.ly/1RlABI5.

The number of artists exceeds last year's participation by 16. At this rate, the museum may need to reduce the size of works allowed to manage the available wall space. Perhaps the introduction of the theme, "water" was a draw. For whatever reason, this exhibit is exceptional in its quality and cohesiveness, and deserves an in person visit.

The public is invited to view the exhibition, either in person or online, and vote for an additional prize, the Public’s Choice Award. Through September 11 voting will take place in the online gallery and in person at the museum. Museum officials ask one vote per person. The artist who created the winning work will win a museum wrapped canvas of Frederic Remington’s 1904 oil painting, “Boat House at Ingleneuk.”

Many of the works will be for sale. One third of the proceeds benefit the Frederic Remington Art Museum, and two thirds go to the artist. The exhibit will have an online gallery at www.fredericremington.org.

The artists in the exhibition are: Ravinder N. Agarwal of Ogdensburg, Dianne Drayse Alonso of Ogdensburg, Jenifer Backus of Massena, Georgette Bacon of Nicholville, Marion Bradish of Winthrop, Sharon H. J.
