Ogdensburg police officials remind residents not all fireworks are legal

OGDENSBURG -- In the wake of what Ogdensburg police say is an increase of fireworks-related complaints, the department issued a statement on Thursday reminding residents that not all fireworks are permitted under a temporary relaxation of the law.

"As of June 10, ground-based or handheld sparking devices became legal for possession on St. Lawrence County," the release says. "Fireworks that explode, causing a loud noise or that launch into the air are still illegal."

Police say Ogdensburg merchants are all complying with the law, the release says, selling only what are known as "class C" fireworks.

The release says anyone using a device that "makes any loud, unnecessary or unusual noise that the disturbs the peace or quiet ... or which causes discomfort or annoyance to any reasonable person" will be charged accordingly.

Police say more information on what fireworks are legal is available at www.dhses.ny.gov.
