OGDENSBURG -- Hoping to improve safety at the Lake and Spring Street intersection city officials are considering traffic changes on Lake Street.

Councilors have agreed that visibility issues on Lake Street make for a dangerous turn on to Spring Street and are considering three different options that would change the flow of traffic, increase driver safety and maintain pedestrian safety.

City Public Works Director Scott Thornhill presented the thee options to city council Monday. Councilor Michael Morley said he preferred a fourth option, which he had come up with, but was not included in the presentation.

Thornhill said the three options were made with safety and cost in mind, with the third option being the least favorable.

Thornhill added that the options could be implemented in phases if the city went with option 1, but later decided to go with another plan.

Option one would make Lake Street a one-way southbound street from Spring Street to Grove Street. It would include new signage along the roadway. The plan would also add a sidewalk for a portion of Lake Street running from Spring Street to the walking trail.

The estimated cost for option one is $25,341.75

Option two would close a portion of Lake Street running from Spring Street to the walking trail. It would also include the establishment of a paved parking lot and turn around for vehicles. The remaining portion of Lake Street would be open to two-way traffic, but would dead end at the walking trail.

The estimated cost for option two is $46,331.

Option three would include a new roadway being built along the walking trail, including a portion of the Maple City Trail. The new road would go under the Lake Street Bridge and would be one way heading north. A portion of Lake Street from Spring Street to the new road would be one-way heading south. The remaining portion of Lake Street would remain two-way traffic.

The cost for option 3 would be $126,920.

The council did not make a decision, but will be reviewing the potential changes prior to the Oct. 14 meeting.
