OGDENSBURG -- Ogdensburg Mayor William Nelson commended city police Monday for their recent efforts in busting methamphetamine makers and dealers.

“I would like to thank chief (Richard Polniak) and the Ogdensburg Police Department for the recent Bust,” he said. “Keep up the good work, keep busting them all. We don’t wont them in our city,” he said.

Nelson said the city police have been working with the St. Lawrence County Drug Task Force in order to stomp out the county’s growing drug problem. The task force consists of state, local and federal law enforcement agencies.

Chief Polniak said the city would continue its efforts.

“We’re not done yet,” he said.

On Friday, city police charged three people in a Canton Street house with numerous charges after executing a search warrant where they found a “one pot” methamphetamine lab.

Ogdensburg firefighters also assisted with the search do to the potential dangers associated with toxic fumes created by the meth-making process.

Stephen J. Ashley, 34, Cassandra J. Ashley, 30, and Blane A. Fisher, 26, all of 533 Canton St., were charged with two counts of third-degree unlawful manufacturing of methamphetamine two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance: methamphetamine.

The active lab was discovered in the upstairs of the home, according to Ogdensburg Police Detective Daniel Mousaw.

Once the lab was discovered, investigators evacuated all residents. At that time, the New York State Police Contaminated Crime Scene Response Team was summoned, as well as the City of Ogdensburg Fire Department stood by on scene.

The lab's caustic and volatile liquid components were removed by the state police team. Once those items were secure, the Ogdensburg Police Department Narcotics Enforcement Unit and St. Lawrence County Drug Task Force members conducted a thorough search of the residence, turning up further lab components and drug evidence, Mousaw said.

The search warrant stems from a narcotics investigation into the home and its residents. The probe is ongoing, and further arrests are possible, police said.

The Ogdensburg Police Department’s Narcotics Enforcement Unit was assisted by members of the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office Drug Task Force, consisting of members from the Sheriff’s Office, Gouverneur Police Department, and the United States Department of Homeland Security Investigations.

The Ogdensburg Police Department was assisted by the New York State Police Contaminated Crime Scene Response Team and the City of Ogdensburg Fire Department.
