OGDENSBURG -- Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center is now using ultraviolet (UV) light disinfection in its fight against hospital-acquired infections (HAI).
Hospital-acquired infections are contracted while receiving care within a hospital setting, CHMC said.
The hospital says their HAI rate is one of the lowest in New York state.
After a patient is discharged, and the room is thoroughly cleaned and the environmental services staff uses the UV disinfector to deliver ultraviolet light doses throughout the room and bathroom.
The UV kills living viruses, spores and drug-resistant bacteria within the room, CHMC said. Microbes, viruses and spores such as MRSA, VRE, C. difficile, and HIV can be reduced or eliminated in as little as 12 to 15 minutes, depending on the room size.
