Ogdensburg to condemn, sell 212 Denny Street property

OGDENSBURG – Ogdensburg agreed to sell a 212 Denny Street property under the condition it be condemned to ensure the property would be demolished or rehabilitated after the sale.

The city had tabled the sale at the last meeting after Brian Morley spoke at a public hearing on the matter and said the parcel is landlocked, full of trash and in poor condition.

Morley, who owns rental properties, said efforts to clean up Denny Street have been made in recent years and selling this property, without a guarantee the structure would be demolished, would be a poor decision.

He said the property has been an eyesore in the area and a haven for drug use. He said the city should use grant funding to tear down the building.

Morley said he would like to see the property purchased by an adjacent landowner once the structure has been removed.

However the city has been working to get properties back on the tax rolls to some degree of success over the past few years with properties going to auction on a near-monthly basis.

Deputy Mayor Daniel Skamperle said he thought condemning the property was a solid compromise.

City Manager Sarah Purdy said that the condemned status would restrict people from living in the property until it has been brought up to code.
