OGDENSBURG -- The Swe-kat-si chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently celebrated their 120th birthday at the Freight House Restaurant.

The chapter was chartered April 8, 1896. It is the 211th chapter of 3,000 worldwide.

Club members who attended were Regent Sally Hartman, Vice Regent Sue Ann Stoner, Recording Secretary Peggy Clute, Corresponding Secretary Jennifer Bixby, Registrar Claire Mathews, Assistant Registrar Roberta Evans, Chaplain Sheila Rendon, Margaret Prudomme, Gloria Johnson, April Bruyere and Betty Mauk. Members of their sister chapter Nihanawate Marlyne Miller and Jo Mittelstaedt-Richards, along with guest June Ross also showed up.

Sue Ann Stoner gave a program on women patriots of the Revolutionary War.

Hartman had the original charter from 1896 on display, along with a visual about the War of 1812 Peace Garden which will surround the chapter’s Piquet Monument and a photograph of the recently placed flag pole at the Ogdensburg City Library.

Other monuments in Ogdensburg related to the chapter are:

DAR monument honoring Abbe Picquet, Fort La Presentation

The Picquet Monument, commissioned in 1899 by members of Swe-kat-si Chapter, NSDAR, is a grey granite obelisk dedicated to the memory of Abbe Picquet who established a fortified mission in May 1749, at the confluence of the Oswegatchie and St. Lawrence Rivers on what is now Lighthouse Point in Ogdensburg.

The Spirit of Liberty, Library Park

Artist Sarah (Sally) Welles James Farnham (1869-1943), an early member of Swe-kat-si Chapter, sculpted the monument Spirit of Liberty as a tribute to the soldiers and sailors of the Civil War. It stands in the park behind the library in Ogdensburg. There is a small bas relief wall plaque of hers featured on the wall of the Continental Hall in Washington, D.C.

The next chapter meeting is May 11 with a Betty Mauk “Writing your Family Stories” workshop from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will be in the Ogdensburg City Library Genealogical Room. Admission is $10 and includes lunch and supplies.

Hartman says anyone seeking more information on the club can contact her at 344-8882 or kyle57@twcny.rr.com.
