POTSDAM -- Fluctuating temperatures have left ice on many rivers, lakes and streams in dangerous conditions and last week’s cold snap has not resolved the problem.
Sunday Potsdam police responded to an emergency call after two “young girls” were reportedly playing on ice near open water.
The girls were apparently gone prior to their arrival.
Officials throughout the region have urged people to stay off the ice of lakes, rivers and streams.
Although temperatures over the past week were low, the National Weather Service is calling for a high of 50 degrees Wednesday.
Earlier in January a Massena man was killed after falling through the ice on a snowmobile. Emergency divers recovered the man’s body a few days after the incident.
Anyone traveling on ice is advised to use caution.
