MASSENA -- Officials say activity at lots that drew public concern over a proposed conversion to village property is stockpiling crushed stone for summer paving, not development.

“We’re stock piling crusher run,” Department of Public Works Superintendent Hassan Fayad said on Tuesday.

He was replying to a question from Diane Meyer of Urban Drive, who asked what was happening with the lot.

The village in February voted to buy 36 parcels total in that area for up to $33,000. There are 18 on Urban Drive, 22 on East Hatfield Street and one large lot on Bayley Road.

Mayor Tim Currier said the sale has not gone through and the board has not officially decided whether or not to use it for the DPW.

"The purchase has not gone through. A determination has not yet been made on the use of the property," Currier said in a Wednesday email.

At the following board meeting in March, about 25 residents from that area turned out to voice opposition to the move. They were concerned having the DPW operating in that area will take away from their quality of life. Some were upset that the purchase was added to the agenda at the last minute at the start of the February meeting, so there was no prior notice.

The plan, Treasurer Julie Sharlow said in February, is to eventually move everything from the DPW on South Main to the lots in question.
