Official says Brasher State Forest trail is not open for public use

BRASHER -- The St. Lawrence County trail coordinator says some people are jumping the gun using the trail in the Brasher State Forest before it’s ready.

"Trail users are anxious but the Brasher Community Connector is not open yet,” Deb Christy said.

“Trail users are anxious to get out on the trail in the Brasher State Forest but the work plans are just being completed and trail work is just starting to build the corridor trail through the scenic Brasher and Ft. Jackson State Forests as part of the Brasher Community Connector Multi-Use Trail,” she said in a press release.

The easternmost section of county multi-use trail opened in 2013 in Parishville and Hopkinton connecting to the Franklin County Line and has just reopened for the seasons.

The newest section of trail, which is not open yet, will start in Helena and run through Brasher, Lawrence and Stockholm, eventually connecting to the existing trail in Hopkinton and Parishville once completed.

“We do not have an opening date for the Brasher trail yet,” Christy said.

“We are urging trail users to please stay out of the Brasher State Forest with ATVs until that time. All trail users need to respect the rules or we will lose these trails before we even get them open,” she warned.

Christy St Lawrence County Trail Coordinator said the “depth of support for the project is overwhelming. As part of a greater regional system, St. Lawrence County is ideally located to anchor a fantastic network that will bring new life to the North Country in the form of long-distance touring, recreational opportunity and huge tourism potential.”
