POTSDAM – Potsdam police responded to more incidents and made more arrests in the first quarter of the year than they did in the last quarter last year.

Potsdam Police Chief Mark Murray’s first-quarter 2018 report shows officers responding to 1,903 incidents between Jan. 1 and March 31 compared with 1,841 from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31 2017, and made 349 arrests from January to March 2018 compared with 349 from October through December 2017.

Police brought six felony, 24 misdemeanor and 24 violation charges in the first three months of this year, compared with six felony, 52 misdemeanor and 24 violation charges in the last quarter of 2017.

Officers responded to 23 domestic incidents in the first quarter, down from 30 in the last quarter of 2017.

Vehicle and traffic offenses accounted for 296 tickets, and there were three alcohol-related charges aside from DWIs, and four violations of village code during the first quarter.

A total of 559 tickets were issued, including for violations of the village code.

Twenty-three percent of the vehicle and traffic stops and investigations resulted in tickets, while 77 percent resulted in warnings to the drivers, Murray said.

Nine driving while intoxicated charges were brought, and 95 motor-vehicle accidents were investigated.

Seven drug arrests were made in the quarter.

Chief Murray delivered his quarterly report at the village Board of Trustees meeting Monday afternoon.
