Norwood Village Green Concert Series sets record with $4,375 collected with 'fill the bucket' at Gibson Brothers concert

NORWOOD – The Norwood Village Green Concert Series’ set a record with its “fill the bucket” collection during the Gibson Brothers concert Sunday, July 24.

Series founder and director Joe Liotta said $4,375 was donated that night by audience members dropping contributions into the bucket that is passed through the crowd at every concert, easily eclipsing the past record of $3,152.

One of the features of this particular “pass the bucket” was the series’ part-time summer workers, primarily 16-year-olds conducting the collection with very little adult help. They also were responsible for organizing and totaling the money and preparing the bank deposit. These young people include Anna Dickinson, Brook Chudzinski, and Brandon Beattie. They were assisted by long-time series part-time worker Marshall Deon and Liotta.

The series is well on its way to overtaking last year’s record “pass the bucket” total of $12,278.

Since its inception in 1977, “pass the bucket” has been a mainstay. Since 1995 $143,987 has been raised through this method.

At the same time donations by check of $25 or more have amounted to $291,225. The series will continue to take donations of $25 or more by check throughout August. Checks should be made payable to the Norwood Village green Concert Series Inc., and mailed to 3 Bicknell Street, Norwood, NY 13668 or placed in the bucket at one of the three remaining concerts.

Last Sunday evening’s concert came close to setting a record, too, with the second-highest attendance in the series history. In 1988 Canada’s Family Brown filled up the green from the band shell on Bernard Avenue all the way to the sidewalk on Spring Street. The space at the time accommodated 5,000 people. Since that time the Joe Mariano Playground was built and the area for attendance now will allow for an audience of 4,500 people. Sunday evening’s audience numbered about 4,000, Liotta said.

There are three more concerts in this year’s series of performances:

•Sunday, July 31, the Bill Vitek/Laura Brown Duo will share the stage with Larry Ham and Friends in an evening of piano jazz. Ham will be joined by Woody Witt, saxophone, Tom Melito, drums, and Lee Hudson, bass. The concert begins at 6 p.m.

• Thursday, Aug. 7, Northbound will perform at 7 p.m. drawing from their broad repertoire.

• Sunday, Aug. 7, the 2016 season concludes with the legendary Donna the Buffalo. The concert begins at 6 pm.
