North Country Assemblywoman holds forum on supporting people with developmental disabilities

Assemblywoman Janet L. Duprey, R-Peru, recently hosted a forum in Plattsburgh focused on supporting the rights of people with developmental disabilities.

Her 115th Assembly District includes a narrow slice of eastern St. Lawrence County, from Brasher down to Piercefield.

Invitees included people with developmental disabilities and their families, non-profit organizations, mental health experts and community leaders.

The task force hosted its first regional forum in response to concerns from families, non-profits, community organizations and individuals with developmental disabilities about the impact of the Olmstead Decision. “This task force is designed to bring together stakeholders from all over the state and from all walks of life to discuss the concerns faced by those with developmental disabilities,” said Duprey. “The information and personal stories shared by mental health experts, community leaders and families tonight will play a vital role in developing a comprehensive plan to better support those with developmental disabilities in our community.”

Discussions focused on identifying better ways to support the rights of people with developmental disabilities; expansion of community-based care programs; the effectiveness of current transition plans for individuals in sheltered workshops; and identifying whether the input and desires of people with disabilities are being considered.

Participants included representatives from Citizens Advocate Inc., Mountain Lake Services, Clinton County Chapter of NYSARC, Inc., Adirondack ARC and local families.

The next Assembly Minority Task Force on Protecting the Rights of People with Developmental Disabilities forum will be held on Thursday, April 14 in Binghamton.
