POTSDAM -- A Norfolk man whose car crashed on Sissonville Road in Potsdam early today severing a power pole and bringing down power lines has been charged with a felony count of driving while intoxicated.
Brandon M. Murray, 28, 3 High St., lost control of his 1995 Toyota Camry on a curve at about 2 a.m. today, according to the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said the car went off the right side of the road and hit the pole, breaking it and sending power lines to the ground. Murray was trapped inside after the car landed on its top.
Units from Potsdam Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad extracted Murray from the car and took him to Canton-Potsdam Hospital where he was treated and released.
Believing Murray to be intoxicated, deputies wanted to administer a breath test to determine Murray's blood alcohol level, but Murray refused, and he was given a ticket for that. The felony DWI charge comes as a result of a previous DWI conviction in Louisville during the last 10 years. He was also charged with failing to reduce speed.
Murray was arraigned in Potsdam Village Court and had his license immediately suspended due to his refusal to take the breath test.
Murray was sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility and ordered held on $2,000 bail to await further court proceedings.
