Neurologist joins St. Lawrence Health System at Canton-Potsdam Hospital

CANTON -- Neurologist Dr. Hamza Malek has joined the medical staff of St. Lawrence Health System’s Canton-Potsdam Hospital and is practicing at the Health System’s Canton Medical Campus, 6119 SH 11.

Malek earned his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Mich. He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, and completed his neurology residency and neuromuscular fellowship at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in Chicago, IL.

During his residency, he spent time teaching third-year medical students on how to perform a lumbar puncture, lectured students in the physician assistant program, and participated in the Immersion Program in Epilepsy conference, given by the Neurology Residents Scholar Program. In 2015, Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Epilepsy Department presented Malek with the Electroencephalogram Proficiency award certifying proficiency in reading EEGs. In 2017, he was recognized with the Resident Teacher of the Year award by McGaw Medical Center’s Northwestern University.

As a neurologist, Malek manages diseases of the central nervous system, consisting of the brain and spinal cord and the peripheral nervous system. He cares for patients with cerebrovascular disease, multiple sclerosis, migraine disorders, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s, and seizures. Standard components of a neurological examination include assessment of the patients’ cognitive function, motor strength, sensation, reflexes, coordination, and gait.
