Motorcylist suffers extensive leg, body injuries after being struck by tractor-trailer truck head-on in Potsdam

POTSDAM – A Newton Falls motorcyclist was medivaced to a Burlington, Vt. hospital Thursday after he was struck head-on by a tractor-trailer truck, according to St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies.

Deputies said Jesse J. Ferguson, 28, Potsdam, was driving a 2003 International tractor-trailer south on NYS Hwy. 72 and struck a motorcycle operated by Ronald L. Swinyer, 50, Newton Falls.

The accident occured about 3:45 p.m. after Fergson pulled into the northbound lane to pass a vehicle partially parked on the highway.

Swinyer was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital by the Potsdam Rescue Squad for treatment of extensive leg and body trauma. He was later medivaced to Fletcher-Allen Medical Center, Burlington, deputies said.

Ferguson suffered no injuries, deputies said.

The accident is under investigation and charges are pending, deputies said.

State police and the Potsdam Volunteer Fire Department assisted deputies at the scene.
