MORRISTOWN -- Morristown Assessor James Snyder is reminding residents to register for Star Credit
“As you all might be aware NY State took over the School Tax Relief, more commonly known as “STAR” program, in 2016 for any “new” applicants. Therefore, people that own their own home and declare it as their primary residence may be eligible to receive a check to help pay for their school taxes,” he said in a prepared statement
“Prior to 2016 this was granted through your local assessor’s office as an exemption and was subtracted off your school tax prior to receiving your bill. Now a homeowner must pay their school tax in full and receive the amount they would have saved in the form of a check from the State,’ he said.
Snyder says those who are not receiving the Star exemption (which would have been granted prior to 2016) or you have not received a check from NYS (which usually arrives in September) should call and see if you are eligible.
Information can be found by going on the New York Department of State website at https://www.tax.ny.gov/star/ or by calling 518-457-2036. You may also contact your local assessor’s office if you have any further questions or concerns.
