Massena woman getting service dog with help from Price Chopper

MASSENA -- Price Chopper is partnering with Milk-Bone to sponsor a service dog for a woman in Massena who needs one.

Laura Jean Westover was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth and struggles with muscular weakness, lack of balance and coordination, spasticity and chronic pain. She wears a leg brace and uses a cane or crutches to help with her with balance and mobility.

A service dog, a dog that is specifically trained to help people with special needs, will retrieve dropped items, open and close doors, press elevator buttons, assist in the case of falls, offer constant companionship and help give the confidence to venture out into the world.

Today, representatives from Price Chopper, Canine Assistant and Milk-Bone will be at the Massena Price Chopper in Harte Haven Plaza at 11 a.m. to announce the plan.

Price Chopper Supermarkets is celebrating Pet Month to honor how pets enrich peoples’ lives. In addition to special activities and coupons, the month-long celebration includes a special Facebook campaign, sponsored by Del Monte (the makers of Milk-Bone, Kibbles n’ Bits and 9 Lives brands) and Nestle (the maker of Purina pet food) that donates $1 to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for every new Price Chopper Facebook Fan.
