MASSENA -- A proposal that has drawn heated debate in the past unanimously passed at Tuesday’s village board meeting with no discussion.
The board voted to let DPW Superintendent Hassan Fayad look for three motor equipment operators.
He said he has three pending retirements of longtime employees, one on Jan. 2 and two more the following month.
He said he wants to start now to allow time for the lengthy search and hire process, and to get them trained since they will be starting their jobs when they will be doing a lot of plowing.
"They don't know the typical operation of these vehicles. There is a training period,” Fayad told the board.
In the past when public works officials have asked the board to look for motor equipment operators, he was met with resistance from trustees Francis Carvel and Albert Deshaies. In March, they both challenged Water Department chief operator Steve Daly when he asked for permission to look for three DPW motor equipment operators. Both trustees at the time voted against the proposal, and it passed after the mayor cast a tie-breaking vote. The following month, the board voted 3-1 with Carvel voting no when Fayad went in front of the board and asked to fill a fourth vacancy. At the Tuesday, Oct. 16 meeting, however, both Carvel and Deshaies voted in favor of a similar motion with no comment prior to the decision.
