Massena town, hospital agree on asset transfer 'in principle'

MASSENA -- The Town Council and Massena Memorial Hospital have agreed to an asset transfer agreement “in principle,” according to a statement from Town Supervisor Steve O’Shaughnessy.

Representatives from both boards met on Friday to discuss the deal.

Attorneys for both sides will now work to produce a final document that the Town Council will have to approve.

The asset transfer has been a roadblock to Massena Memorial transitioning from a town-owned facility to a private, non-profit entity.

Hospital officials are working to affiliate to some degree with a larger healthcare system. O’Shaughnessy in the past said they have had talks with St. Lawrence Health System, which oversees Canton-Potsdam and Gouverneur hospitals.

“The Hospital is committed to moving forward with the privatization and an affiliation with a larger system,” Scott A. Wilson, hospital board chairman, said in a prepared statement. “We are reviewing all options for affiliation partners and will continue discussions to determine our best option.”

“The Town is very pleased with the results of the meeting and the progress that was made with the Asset Transfer Agreement,” O'Shaughnessy said in a prepared statement. “I am confident that the Town and the Hospital will continue to work cooperatively to get a deal done as efficiently as possible.”
