MASSENA -- The Town Council on Wednesday voted to create a bank account with $5,000 for the Winter Chill, a multi-town event set for 10 days in February.

“We’ll basically be the bank for this year because there is no startup money,” Town Supervisor Joseph Gray said.

The Town of Louisville and Village of Waddington, two of the other municipalities involved, are matching it.

“I have a verbal commitment from Louisville and the Village of Waddington to contribute $5,000 to match our $5,000 … no word from the Town of Waddington,” Gray said.

Massena’s cash might be used for an ice fishing derby prize.

“They will have fish-off for a larger prize the second day … held on Massena waters,” the town supervisor said.

He said they may try to bring in the Montreal Canadiens Legends alumni team to play a hockey game, but the cost might prevent it.

“There’s a significant deposit there … maybe $10,000,” he said.

Event coordinator Mike Gagner on Nov. 20 said although there isn't a contract in place, they tentatively plan to host the Legends game at Massena Arena Feb. 14.

He also said a Guinness record attempt mentioned in his announcement of the event in September isn’t happening due to cost constraints.

Gagner on Nov. 20 said the Guinness record attempt is still on tap.
