MASSENA – A Massena man has been charged with six traffic and vehicle violations for allegedly driving a gas-powered bicycle at night on South Main Street.

State police charged Joshua A. Barrett, 23, with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle second degree after he was stopped at approximately 10:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers said he was operating a bicycle with a 49cc gas-powered motor on the northbound shoulder of the road without any lights. As the bicycle passed by patrol, police said it they clearly heard that the bicycle was propelled by the gas powered engine.

After Barrett was stopped, police said they determined he had 11 motor vehicle license suspensions on eight different dates.

Police said the bicycle did not meet state Department of Motor Vehicles moped law, was unregistered, uninsured and uninspected.

As a result, Barrett was also charged with unlicensed operator, unregistered motor vehicle, uninsured motor vehicle, uninspected motor vehicle and inadequate lights, police said

Barrett is to answer the charges in Massena Village Court on Sept. 13.
