NORFOLK – State police Thursday night identified the man who died in a two-car collision on NYS Hwy. 56 as Michael J. Hunter, 36, of Massena.
Police said the crash occurred shortly before 3:10 p.m. after Hunter attempted to pass another uninvolved vehicle on the right while it was stopped in traffic waiting to make a left turn into a private driveway. Hunter lost control of his 1984 Oldsmobile, entered the southbound lane and was struck by a 2007 Acura traveling south and operated by Micki T. Nesbitt, 62, of Colton, police said.
Hunter was transported to Massena Memorial Hospital where he died from injuries received in the crash, police said.
Nesbitt and his wife and front seat passenger, Shirley Nesbitt, were transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital with minor injuries, police said.
St Lawrence County Coroner Jamie Sienkiewicyz has ordered an autopsy for Friday to determine the cause of death.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing, police said.
