MASSENA -- A Massena man is facing multiple charges for allegedly breaking into a locked car, stealing checks and a debit card and using them, according to Massena Police.
Jason J. Malone, 37, of P.O. Box 252, Massena is charged with second-degree forgery and second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, both felonies, as well as misdemeanor counts of fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, fourth-degree criminal mischief and two counts of petit larceny, police said.
Malone on Jan. 11 around 7:22 p.m. allegedly smashed the window of a parked and locked Dodge Journey at Massena Memorial Hospital and stole a purse, which contained a debit card and checks, according to documents filed with Massena Village Court.
He then allegedly tried to cash one of the checks made out to “cash” for $300 at On A Roll Deli. He left the store after a clerk said they wanted to call the person whose name was on the check and Malone left, according to court documents.
He then went to Walmart and used the debit card twice, withdrawing a total of $225 from the alleged victim’s account and signing their name, court documents state.
Malone was arraigned in Massena Village Court by Justice Patrick Serguson and released under probationary supervision, pending a future appearance.
He was turned over to state police and sent to the county jail in Canton on unrelated charges, Massena Police said.
