MASSENA -- There are still free smoke detectors available through a program offered by the Massena Volunteer Fire Department and International Association of Firefighters Local 2220.

They are offering two free smoke detectors per family with an annual income of $34,000 or less.

He said any families with income in that range can call the department at 315-769-2380. Firefighters will come to the home and install the detectors for free.

“We are going to go to their house and install them,” said fire department spokesman Thomas Miller, adding that they will also give advice on how to bring any code violations they may spot up to compliance.

This is the second round of the program, which the firefighters are funding themselves. Miller said through a connection with Everything Electric, they were able to get the detectors at a good price.

The first round of the program offered free smoke detectors to ages 65 and older. That was through a partnership with the Massena volunteers and union drivers, along with the New York State Fire Chiefs Association.

“That seemed to work so well. They would call the fire station. They would ask a couple questions like their age … and they would set up an appointment and we would go an install them, and speak a little on fire prevention if they wanted to partake,” Miller said.

There are also smoke detectors available through that program, he added. People can call the same number to participate, 315-769-2380.
