MASSENA – The Massena Fire Station, 34 Andrews St., will be open as a warming station for anyone needing a place to stay during the sub-zero weather.
Massena Mayor Timmy J Currier said the fire station opened at 10 a.m. today and will remain open through 10 a.m. Tuesday. Emergency personnel will be on hand to assist anyone.
Anyone with an emergency situation is encouraged to immediately call 911, Currier said.
The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning, which means the combination of very cold air and the wind will create dangerously low wind chill values. Frostbite can occur quickly and even hypothermia or death if precautions are not taken. Dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.
“It is very dangerous for anyone to be outside in these frigid temperatures. Please check on your neighbors and anyone that might be vulnerable. I also encourage you to bring your pets inside and reduce any exposure to them, as well,” said Currier.
