MASSENA -- The Town Council is planning a public hearing to extend the solar moratorium by three months.
A specific date and time has not yet been announced.
Town officials on Wednesday said they want to extend the ban past the original February expiration because they need more time to come up with local laws governing large-scale solar projects.
Councilor Tom Miller said he was concerned they may be holding up commercial ventures that want to come to town, but he later voted in favor of the hearing after a reassurance from town attorney Eric Gustafson.
"Is there anybody looking to move in this community right now? Are we going to hold them up?" Miller asked.
"We've been approached, but this won't hold them up,” Gustafson said. "I don't think any of the projects are far enough along.
"The moratorium as we drafted it didn't stop people who want to put small scale solar on their houses for on-premises consumption at all. There's no impact,” he said.
