Massena eyeing ‘aggressive strategy’ at downtown pedestrian crossing

MASSENA -- Massena police may step up enforcing right-of-way laws in a pedestrian crossing on Main Street.

Mayor Tim Currier said he received a complaint of safety problems near the former Clopman’s building, which is between Water and Phillips streets.

"We had a downtown business owner reach out about pedestrian safety ... particularly in the downtown core,” the mayor said at Tuesday’s village board meeting. He did not say who the person was or which business they own.

The mayor said he had has discussed the problem with Massena police Chief Adam Love and Lt. Jason Olson. Currier said he think they will conduct "light enforcement at first. People aren't stopping for people in crosswalks."

"An aggressive strategy is going to be necessary,” the mayor said. "Traffic comes from the north side heading south. Kind of a tough corner. We want to start focusing on pedestrian safety issues. It goes along with the Complete Streets policy."
