Massena delays cryptocurrency meeting to discuss code changes

MASSENA — The Town Council at a Wednesday special meeting delayed until their regular meeting next week discussing code changes that would address cryptocurrency mining.

Town Councilman Samuel Carbone said he wants to see any code changes address people running home mining facilities out of seaboxes, large cargo containers used in shipping.

“I’ve seen some pictures where they have these seaboxes planted out in a field and doing their own mining,” he said. “They put racks in the seaboxes, load them up with computers, put a fan on the end.”

“I think we need to look at codes that deal with seaboxes.”

He said he would be open to certain areas of town being open to running a home cryptocurrency mine.

“We should have more information about that next week,” Town Supervisor Steve O’Shaughnessy said.

This came after the board voted to declare a parcel of land as surplus, which allows them to sell it. Blockchain Industries, a cryptocurrency mining firm, approached the board last month and asked if they could buy the land. They want to build a cryptocurrency mine on the land.
