Massena BOE approves teacher aides and substitutes; okays resignations, retirements and a termination

MASSENA — The Board of Education on Thursday approved teacher aides and substitutes, along with okaying leaves of absence, resignations, retirements and a termination.

The board hired teacher aides Darbi DeLosh (high school, effective Jan. 12), Crystal White (Jefferson Elementary, effective Feb. 12) and Katelyne Sharlow (junior high, effective Jan. 17) all at $17,904 pro-rated salaries. The board also hired Jan Normile as a high school teacher on special assignment from Auf. 31, 2017 to June 30, 2018 at a $59,741 salary. She will be the International Baccalaureate program coordinator, according to the board’s list of personnel actions.

The board approved the following substitutes: Rose Bronchetti, long-term high school teacher sub, March 9 to a to-be-determined date, paid $100 to $150 per day, she is certified in physical education; Maria LaPage, Nightengale Elementary long-term teaching assistant sub, March 19 to April 30, paid $80 per day; districtwide teacher/teaching assistant subs Chandler Flaro and Jessica Shaul (each effective Jan. 3), Sydney Shadle (effective Jan. 4), and Jacob Keleher (effective Jan. 12), all to be paid $85 or $80 per day; Shadle was also approved as a support staff sub at $10.50 per hour.

The board granted the following leaves of absence: high school guidance counselor Julianne White, Dec. 11, 2017 to Dec. 11, 2018; high school English language arts teacher Trista Gerard, Dec. 18, 2017 to Dec. 11, 2018; Nightengale teaching assistant Kari Martin, March 19 to April 30; high school physical education teacher Margaret Farrell, March 9 to a to-be-determined date; high school custodian Perry Hayden, Nov. 21, 2017 to Nov. 21, 2018.

The board accepted resignations from junior high special education teacher Leigha Burkhalter, effective Jan. 13 and junior high food service helper Andrea Post, effective Jan. 5.

The board okayed several retirements: junior high family and consumer science teacher Anne Root, junior high special education teacher Lauren Czajkowski, junior high technology teacher Sandra Gleason, Jefferson Elementary teacher Joan Bulger and Jefferson teacher Catherine Dix, all effective June 30.

The board voted to fire Nightengale Elementary cleaner Gerry Sabanal, effective Dec. 20, 2017, who was in a probationary period, the list of personnel actions says.
