POTSDAM – Police and firefighters rescued a 23-year-old man stranded in the swollen Racquette River early this morning.
Village police responded at 4:25 a.m. after receiving a report that someone was stuck in the river under the Maple Street bridge next to the Sugar Creek convenience.
Patrols were assisted by state police and the St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies. The Potsdam Fire Department also responded and assisted.
Officers were able to successfully remove the victim, Eric M. Daddario, from the water within about eight minutes without incident.
Police said Daddario was accompanied by his friend, Daniel S. Reed, 22, who was able to get out of the water to report the incident. Both are members of the Clarkson University hockey team.
Daddario was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital by the Potsdam Rescue Squad for evaluation.
The incident is still under investigation, police said.
