FOWLER – A California man was airlifted by helicopter to a Syracuse hospital for treatment of head injuries Sunday after he crashed the ATV he was driving.

Richard J. Mason Jr., 29, of San Pedro, Calif., crashed after the left hand side of his head struck a hanging branch on an ATV trail, according to St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies.

He was transported by the Gouverneur Rescue Squad to E.J. Noble Hospital, Gouverneur, and then was flown to Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, due to the extent of his injury, deputies said.

Mason had been operating a red 1999 Polaris Sportsman four-wheeler. The accident occurred shortly before 2:39 p.m.
