POTSDAM -- Brian Tiernan was named Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s Volunteer of the Season for Spring 2011 recently during the Hospital’s annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner.

Lyndsay Macagg, Volunteer Services Coordinator, presented the honor as approximately 60 volunteers from all areas of the hospital looked on. The award recognizes extraordinary service to patients and their families.

Tiernan is a student at Madrid-Waddington Central School and volunteers with the Hospital each Wednesday; he has served as a volunteer with CPH since 2010.

“Brian is a familiar friendly presence at our front door,” said David B. Acker, FACHE, President and CEO of CPH.

“He serves with our valets as ‘traffic director’ when patients and visitors arrive, ensuring they know how to get where they’re going, and also wishing them well when they leave. Brian also helped us with sales of pink lights during our breast cancer awareness event last October,” Mr. Acker noted. “He made the most sales, and helped make that event a resounding success.”

Mr. Acker spoke further at the Recognition Dinner about the critical importance of all volunteers to the Hospital, noting that some volunteers have served for over 30 years, and many raise much-needed financial support for the Hospital, whether through special events such as the pink lights awareness campaign or through the Hospital’s gift shop.

The Volunteer Services Department at Canton-Potsdam Hospital recruits, screens, and places community members from all walks of life, ages 14 to Senior Citizens and beyond, in service positions throughout the Hospital. In 2010, volunteers dedicated over 10,000 hours of service to the Hospital. Many volunteers also serve other organizations in the community.
