MADRID -- The Madrid-Waddington Yellowjackets are headed to the final four state Class D baseball championships this coming weekend.
They got the there with an 11-1 victory over Lake Placid in Plattsburgh Saturday.
Shane Tiernan got the win on the mound pitching a complete game. He also contributed two hits to the winning effort. Catcher Owen Uppstrom batted for three hits, and second baseman Kyle Field got a double and an RBI.
Yellowjackets coach Justin Richards told his team he was “very proud of them” after their victory.
“”It’s the first time in our history we’ve reached the final four,” Richards said. “They all put in the work, and they’ve all been in big games, and they know how to come back and win,” he said.
Whatever happens, he said, he told the boys to “enjoy the experience.”
The team is 11-1 overall on the season with three playoff wins.
The Yellowjackets will meet the team from Fort Plain in the semi-finals Friday in Binghamton. Fort Plain beat the Tuxedo team 13-0 Saturday to earn their slot in the semis.
The finals are on Saturday, June 9.
