A number of St. Lawrence County schools will participate in Farm to You Fest 2010, NY Harvest for NY Kids Week, a weeklong celebration Sept. 27 to Oct. 5 of local food and agriculture.

School food service directors, farmers, and St. Lawrence Health Initiative and Cornell Cooperative Extension staff have worked together to prepare for this event. Participating meal programs will highlight local foods on Thursday, Sept. 30. The common menu includes vegetable and cheddar quesadillas, squash soup, corn on the cob, apple and milk. Ingredients will be sourced from school gardens, local farms and regional distributors.

Activities may also include taste tests, or a visit from a farmer, nutrition or agriculture educator. GardenShare’s Local Food Guide may be used to locate farms or farmers’ markets to visit and find local food.

For more information about St. Lawrence County involvement, contact your school district’s food service director or Artie Frego at 764-3700 ext. 3110.
