Local cable tv shows to focus on realigning legislative districts due to population shifts

A second program in a local series on realigning legislative districts due to population shifts will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on WCKN, cable channel 30, on March 14 and 15 and again on March 21 and 22.

This program, on county legislative districts, features Jon Montan of the St. Lawrence County Planning Office discussing the history of and the methods used in creating the current county district map. He is joined by local League of Women Voters members Sue Cypert, Canton, and Miles Manchester, Potsdam.

The series is sponsored and produced in cooperation with the St. Lawrence County League of Women Voters and the county chapter of the American Association of University Women, in partnership with Clarkson communications students, with CU’s Dan Dullea.

The good news is there is time to take all the factors – like how and if to count prisoners and college students – into account, since the next county legislature election isn’t until 2014. The Planning Office expects to get the official NYS Census numbers in shortly and can begin drawing up various redistricting plans to meet the needs of the law and the citizens, subject to approval by the Board of Legislators.

Part three in this series will feature SLU retired Professor Robert Wells discussing various redistricting reform plans with the communications students. His lecture and the student’s questions will all be part of the final broadcast on this topic for the spring season of North Country Matters.
