Literacy of Northern New York campaigning for more awareness, support

POTSDAM -- Literacy of Northern New York will contact St. Lawrence County organizations via their “LNNY and the 1000 emails” campaign aimed at greater awareness of their organization and more support.

Illiteracy is often an inter-generational problem, and LNNY seeks to break the cycle by reaching out to parents and other adults.

They train volunteers to work one-to-one with adults with reading, writing, and math skills, and learning English as a second language in St. Lawrence, Jefferson and Lewis counties at no cost to the individual.

They provide a personal and private educational assessment for every student and formulate an individual learning plan with one-to-one tutoring with books and materials for adults who are non-readers, up through eighth-grade level.

Students from other countries have a chance to socialize as well as open up other learning opportunities.

Tutors conduct periodical retesting to measure progress.

They help with reading and math content for students who want to obtain their New York State high school equivalency certificates (formerly known as the GED).

In St. Lawrence County, LNNY has distributed more than 3,000 free books across the county through SHELFIE! program, donated hundreds of books to daycare facilities, and donated “Blind Date with a Book” baskets for local charity auctions.

Donations may be sent to Literacy of Northern NY, 2 Park St., Potsdam, NY 13676.
