POTSDAM -- James McGuire has been officially appointed as assessor for the Town of Potsdam.
McGuire, a former Triple A Building Centers manager, was hired to be acting assessor in July 2017 while he finished his certification to be permanent assessor.
Kim Bisonette, a former assessor who had been filling in as acting assessor, resigned that post and was then hired as a consultant to help McGuire get up to speed.
McGuire has a master’s degree in finance and has been a member of the community for 30 years.
His appointment was made official at the Town Council’s Feb. 13 meeting. His salary will be $40,780 per year.
The vacancy in the assessor’s office occurred when the man then in the position, James Snyder, resigned and filed suit against the town with a claim of sex discrimination. The Town Council accepted his resignation in April 2017.
Snyder, claiming damages of $1 million, alleges in his suit that the town discriminated against him because of his sex in matters of salary, benefits and treatment compared with women at the town office.
That suit remains unresolved.
In other action at their meeting, the council agreed to accept a proposal from Twinstate Technologies for installation of a new telephone system at Town Hall, including the control module, four central office lines several other lines, and voicemail, which will cost $4,317.40.
