NORWOOD – An investigation, begun last December, has led to the arrest of the former commander of the Norwood Sons of the American Legion, accused of stealing from the post.

After the investigation by St. Lawrence County sheriff's deputies that began last Dec. 13, Sidney Belile, 8714 State Rt. 56, Raymondville, has been charged with two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and one count of fourth-degree grand larceny, all felonies.

Belilie cashed two forged checks, one in Massena and one in Potsdam, according to deputies.

He also stole $1,240 from the Norwood post, deputies said.

Belilie was arraigned in the Village of Potsdam court and was sent to the county correctional facility on $3,000 cash bail or $6,000 bond.
