MORRISTOWN -- A house fire Thursday afternoon killed one dog and completely destroyed a home at Terrace Part Road #2, according to Morristown Fire Chief Kevin Crosby.

The blaze was first reported to the fire department at 1:29 p.m. and firefighters were on scene at 1:34 p.m. and started to attack the fire when neighbors said that there were two dogs inside the house, Crosby said.

Morristown interior crews reportedly searched the downstairs of the home where they located the dogs shortly and carried them from the home.

Crosby and First Assistant Chief Dean Hoffman started CPR on one dog found while bystanders attempted CPR on another dog. Crosby and Hoffman’s efforts to revive the dog were reportedly successful while the other dog died on scene.

Morristown Rescue transported the surviving dog to Bridgeport Veterinary Clinic in Ogdensburg for treatment.

"The dog was in good condition as of last night," Crosby said.

The house was considered at total loss.

"The fire had a big head start on us when we arrived, there was heavy fire and smoke showing from the second floor," said Crosby.

Morristown Engine 34 responded with five interior fire fighters on board and was first to arrive.

Engine 34 requested mutual aid from the Bier Hill and Heuvelton Fire Departments and advised dispatch it was a working structure fire, Crosby said.

"We were setting up for a defensive attack on the house when the neighbors advised us of the dogs, we entered the building for a quick search and Hoffman found the dogs quickly but unfortunately one of them didn’t make it," he said.

The occupant Jennifer VanTassel was reportedly not at home at the time of the fire.

"We responded with 19 fire fighters which is great for a day time fire, with Brier Hill and Heuvelton adding another 35 fire fighters," Crosby said.

They were assisted on scene by the Brier Hill and Heuvelton fire departments with Gouverneur fire on standby at the Morristown Fire Station, he said.

Also on scene was the Morristown Aux., National Grid and the town of Morristown with a sander.

The home was reportedly owned by Tracy VanTassel.

No injuries to firefighters were reported.

Firefighters were back in service at 5:27 p.m.
