Higher temps, snowmelt, rain prompt warning of possbile flooding in St. Lawrence County today

With the combination of moderate rain early this morning and snowmelt from mild temperatures today, the National Weather Service is warning of sharp rises and possible flooding on rivers and streams in St. Lawrence County. Although widespread flooding is not expected, normally flood-prone areas may be impacted, the NWS says.

Rain ends this morning with a surface low pressure area that is moving northeast from the North Country toward the Gulf of St. Lawrence late today. Patchy fog this morning is expected dissipate by early afternoon.

Drier and seasonable weather is expected on Saturday, followed by another frontal passage with scattered light rain and snow showers for Saturday night. Temperatures will trend cooler to start next week.

Highs today are expected to be in the low to mid 40s.

With clearing skies late tonight, forecasters predict overnight lows will drop into the mid-20s.

Sunny skies are expected Saturday with high temperatures near 50 degrees.

Expect rain showers Saturday night into Sunday, maybe mixing with some snow. Lows will be around the freezing mark.

The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and the northwestern Adirondacks:

• Today: A 40 percent chance of showers, mainly before noon. Patchy fog before 11am. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 42. Northwest wind 9 to 11 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Tonight: Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 26. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light west after midnight.

• Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 49. Southwest wind 9 to 14 mph.

• Saturday Night: Rain showers likely before 2am, then rain likely, possibly mixed with snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 31. Breezy, with a south wind 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

• Sunday: A 30 percent chance of snow showers before 9am. Partly sunny, with a high near 37. Breezy, with a southwest wind 20 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

• Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 21. West wind 8 to 11 mph.

• Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 39. West wind 6 to 10 mph.

• Monday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 25. South wind 5 to 7 mph.

• Tuesday: A chance of snow showers before noon, then a chance of rain and snow showers between noon and 1pm, then rain showers likely after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 42. Southeast wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

• Tuesday Night: Rain showers likely before 11pm, then rain and snow showers likely. Cloudy, with a low around 32. Southeast wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

• Wednesday: Rain and snow showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 40. West wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

• Wednesday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 20. West wind around 9 mph.

• Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 36. West wind 9 to 11 mph.
