POTSDAM – The state Health Department has once again cracked down on a community event that involved meals as part of a church's 200th anniversary celebration this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The health department has informed the First Presbyterian Church of Potsdam that they cannot invite the public to two planned dinners during their Bicentennial Celebration, and must alter their plans for a formal tea.

A barbecue dinner scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday and a turkey and ham dinner slated for 2 p.m. Sunday are for parishioners only, according to Pamela Whittet, congregation member.

A schedule of events had been sent out to media listing the two dinners, causing the health department to make a call to the church to make sure to restrict attendees.

A third event, the formal tea planned for 3-5 p.m. Friday in the community center, will still take place, but congregation members are not allowed to bring in homemade goodies, as was originally planned. Whittet said the health department will allow them to purchase cakes from a professional bakery instead.

Bicentennial Weekend events include:

• Friday, June 10, 3-5 p.m., Formal Tea in the Community Center. View bicentennial displays, enjoy desserts, and make a donation towards the roof renovation fund.

• Saturday, June 11, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Church History Exhibit at Potsdam Public Museum. Pick up tour maps of Bayside Cemetery; 1:30 p.m., Bayside Cemetery Talk, Susan and John Omohundro at Potsdam Public Museum; 2 p.m., Bicentennial Exhibit Introduction, Ruth Kreuzer at Potsdam Public Museum; until 5 p.m., tour Bayside Cemetery, visit graves of former pastors and church families; 3 p.m., brief Devotional Service at the cemetery entrance with Tom Ballard.

• Sunday, June 12, 10 a.m., Bicentennial Worship Service in the sanctuary. Rev. Tom Ballard to officiate. Worship will include special music, four generations of readers, Scott Barton to give the sermon, recognition of 50-year members. It's Pentecost Sunday, so remember to wear red. Special coffee hour to follow.
