A Hammond man faces a 50-count grand jury indictment charging repeated sexual assaults on a 12-year-old.
Robert M. Petrie, Jr., 44, of 6 Bailey Rd., Hammond, is charged with 24 counts of predatory sexual assault against a child, a Class A-II felony, each count of which is punishable by a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
The indictment also includes 24 counts of first-degree criminal sexual acts and one count of perpetrating a course of sexual conduct against a child in the first degree, all Class B felonies, and one misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child.
St. Lawrence County District Attorney Mary Rain said, in announcing the indictment, that such behavior demands “a swift and forceful message that those who prey on helpless children will be held accountable for their actions.”
“The predatory sexual assault of a child is an utterly reprehensible act,” said Rain.
Rain credited members of the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department for diligent work in a thorough investigation.
