North Country Senators Joe Griffo (R-Rome) and Patty Ritchie (R-Heuvelton) Tuesday hailed what they expected to be passage this afternoon of a bill in the Senate that would create a felon registry similar to the sex offender registry.
They are calling it “Brittany’s Law,” akin to New York’s “Megan’s Law” list of sex offenders, so that parents and neighbors could check to learn if ex-cons are living in their community.
Ritchie today also appealed to constituents to help her get support for a bill she is calling “Mark’s Law,” after Emergency Medical Technician Mark Davis, who was “senselessly shot to death while responding to a call for help.”
“Many people in the emergency medical service community vowed that his sacrifice would never be forgotten,” Ritchie said, and introduced the legislation to elevate murder of a first responder to first-degree murder, akin to murder of a police officer or corrections officer.
Ritchie was also celebrating passage in the Senate of her bill to allow the sale of wine-flavored frozen desserts in New York State.
The new law allows companies to use wine up to five percent alcohol by volume in any frozen dessert.
