Grey, wet weather in St. Lawrence County could break Friday night, forecasters say

A break in the grey, wet weather in the North Country is approaching, but not for a few days, the National Weather Service says.

Light rain and snow showers will continue in the St. Lawrence Valley and the Adirondacks today with temperatures warming into the upper 30s to lower 40s.

A chance of rain and snow showers is expected through Friday with daytime highs around 40 and overnight lows around the freezing mark. The weather service says “plowable” wet snow accumulation is expected in the mountains Thursday into Friday.

A break will come Friday night as skies clear and daytime temperatures begin to rise, into the mid to upper 40s on Saturday and the 50s on Sunday. The forecast calls for temperatures to rise further, to near 60 on Monday and Tuesday under sunny skies.

The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:

• Today: Showers likely, mainly before 2pm. Cloudy, with a high near 41. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Tonight: A chance of rain showers before 11pm, then a chance of rain and snow showers between 11pm and 1am, then a chance of snow showers after 1am. Cloudy, with a low around 32. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

• Thursday: Snow likely before 9am, then rain and snow likely between 9am and 11am, then rain after 11am. High near 39. North wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

• Thursday Night: Rain, possibly mixed with snow, becoming all snow after 1am. Low around 33. Northwest wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

• Friday: Snow likely before 9am, then rain and snow likely between 9am and 11am, then a chance of rain after 11am. Cloudy, with a high near 41. Northwest wind 9 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

• Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 30. Northwest wind 6 to 8 mph.

• Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 47. Northwest wind 7 to 9 mph.

• Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 29. Northwest wind 3 to 6 mph.

• Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 51. Northwest wind 3 to 7 mph.

• Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 30. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

• Monday: Sunny, with a high near 58. West wind 3 to 5 mph.

• Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 35. South wind around 5 mph.

• Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 63. Southwest wind 6 to 9 mph.
