POTSDAM – Four Massena residents have been charged by St. Lawrence County Drug Task Force after two were found carrying pot plants out of the woods off the Elliot Road Sept. 30.
According to deputies, James E. Waite Jr., 44, 259 Center St., Massena, and Darren M. Chaffee, 37, 190 Center St., Massena, were both charged with second-degree criminal possession of marijuana at about 11:45 a.m.
Deputies allege the two were in possession of more than one pound of marijuana.
Tanya L. Demers, 27, 259 Center St., Massena, and Michael H. Savage, 21, 210 Bayley Road, Massena, were both charged with fifth-degree conspiracy on the same date because they were both involved in the incident, deputies report.
Waite and Chaffee were arraigned in Potsdam Town Court where Waite was held on $5,000 cash bail and Chaffee was held on $2,500 cash bail. They are due back in court on Oct. 5.
Savage and Demers were issued appearance tickets to answer charges on Oct. 13 in Potsdam Town Court.
Deputies said the investigation is ongoing and further arrests are pending.
Task force members were assisted by the sheriff's road patrol, criminal investigators and the state police canine unit.
