AKWESASNE -- Court documents reveal the two former St. Regis Mohawk Tribe Early Childhood Development Program workers from Massena are accused of grabbing and shoving a four-year-old while screaming in his face. This allegedly caused bruises and scratches and happened in front of other children, according to documents filed with Bombay Town Court.

On July 12, St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police charged Kimberly A. Moffitt, 45, of Grove Street, Massena with seven counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of second-degree harassment, the tribe said.

That same day, police charged Melissa S. Dunkelberg, 33, of Jefferson Avenue, Massena with 12 counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of second-degree harassment, according to the tribe.

The endangerment counts are misdemeanors and the harassment charge is a violation.

Their alleged crimes took place on May 12 around 11:45 a.m. at 25 Library Road, Akwesasne, court documents say.

Moffitt is charged with harassment and one counts of endangerment for allegedly yanking and shoving a child “into a sitting position,” according to court documents. This “caused the child to grunt as he was slammed into an un-cushioned chair,” court documents state. She then allegedly screamed and yelled in the child’s face, causing him to cry, which he continued to do for several minutes, according to court documents. Moffitt then yanked the child “up into her arms taking the child out of the room, stating the child was no longer welcome to be in the classroom,” the accusatory paperwork says. This allegedly caused bruising to the child’s arm and left thigh. Moffitt is charged with additional counts of endangerment because it allegedly happened in front of six other four-year-olds, the documents say.

Dunkelberg is charged with harassment and one count of endangerment for allegedly yanked a four-year-old child by one arm, off his feet, according to court documents. During this, she allegedly scratched his face while not tending to the screaming child or releasing his arm from her grip, which also caused bruising, the documents say. She is charged with additional counts of child endangerment because this allegedly happened in front of 11 other children ranging from ages four to six, according to court documents.

Following their arrests, Justice Terry Durant arraigned then both in Bombay Town Court.

Moffitt was released on her own recognizance.

Dunkelberg was released under probationary supervision.

They are to re-appear on a later date.
